Whether you've been writing for years or have stored up ideas in a shoebox waiting to see the light of day, the time is now to write your memoir.
Our courses usually meet in the oasis of a spacious contemporary home in Red Hook on the banks of the rushing Sawkill Creek, in the historic Hudson River Valley.
During Covid, we meet via Zoom.
Courses are led by award-winning author Emily Sachar, whose memoirs and articles have been published to critical acclaim. The highlights:
  • Courses run from 6-8 weeks, 2 hours each class.
  • A delicious buffet lunch with wine, prepared by chef Joel Gordin, is served after each class (when we meet in-person).
  • No prior memoir-writing experience is necessary.
About Instructor Emily Sachar: Emily is an award-winning journalist whose first memoir, Shut Up and Let the Lady Teach (Simon & Schuster), explored her year teaching eighth-grade math in a troubled Brooklyn school. The book was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Emily has written hundreds of articles for national magazines including Family Circle, the AARP Bulletin, Cowboys & Indians, and Ladies Home Journal. A life-long learner, Emily earned her M.A. in art history in 2017 and has taught writing and art history at New York University, Bard College, and the State University of New York. Emily holds a B.A. in economics and American history from Stanford University. After 36 years in Brooklyn, she now lives in Red Hook, in the Hudson River Valley.

By way of background: This memoir class grew out of a course offered in early 2019 at The Olana State Historic Site, designed and taught by Emily Sachar. Olana in 2018 won a grant from Aroha Philanthropies to inaugurate the creative aging course; Emily authored the grant proposal. When several students wished to continue the memoir course, Emily was inspired to open her home for those students and others.
